Forty years ago, punk rock’s most notorious couple got their own movie. And somehow, Sid and Nancy remains just as disturbing, fascinating and unforgettable today.
Released in American theaters on November 7, 1986, director Alex Cox’s Sid and Nancy chronicled the destructive relationship between Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. The film starred Gary Oldman in a remarkable early performance that helped establish him as one of his generation’s finest actors.
And what a career he’s had since. From Bram Stoker’s Dracula and the Harry Potter movies to his Oscar-winning portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour and his current role in Slow Horses, Oldman has become one of Hollywood’s most versatile performers.
To celebrate the film’s 40th anniversary, we’re opening the Stuck in the ’80s vault and revisiting Episode 89, originally recorded in 2007.
Join Steve Spears and former co-host Cathy Wos as they discuss the film’s unforgettable performances, its outstanding soundtrack featuring Joe Strummer and the Pogues, and the tragic real-life story behind the movie.
Cathy shares stories about her teenage obsession with Sid and Nancy, including why her first car was nicknamed the “Sidmobile.” Spearsy recalls playing Sex Pistols songs with his old Tampa Bay punk band, Epic Trash.
Plus, we reveal which future pop superstar nearly played Nancy Spungen, debate our favorite Gary Oldman movies and revisit some of the film’s most memorable scenes.
It’s a fascinating trip back to 1986—and to the early days of Stuck in the ’80s.
