We all have one.
It might not be the best movie of the ’80s. It might not have won awards or conquered the box office. It might even be a movie you’ve spent the last four decades unsuccessfully trying to convince your friends is much better than they remember.
But somehow, it became your movie.
For some people, it’s Back to the Future. For many, it’s The Breakfast Club. Maybe yours is The Goonies, Valley Girl, Say Anything or another movie that caught you at precisely the right moment in your life.
For me, it has always been Streets of Fire.
Walter Hill’s 1984 movie famously billed itself as “A Rock & Roll Fable,” and more than 40 years later, that’s still about as good a description as any. It exists in a strange universe that seems to be simultaneously the 1950s, the 1980s and some alternate reality that never existed at all.
There are motorcycles and neon. There are leather jackets and sledgehammers. There’s Michael Paré as Tom Cody, Diane Lane as rock star Ellen Aim, Amy Madigan as McCoy and Willem Dafoe as Raven Shaddock, looking like the last person on Earth you’d ever want to encounter in a dark alley.
And then there’s the music.
From “Tonight Is What It Means to Be Young” to “I Can Dream About You,” the soundtrack is as much a character in Streets of Fire as anyone on screen.
The movie wasn’t the hit its creators hoped it would be. Plans for further adventures disappeared along with its disappointing box-office performance. But something funny happened on the way to obscurity: Streets of Fire refused to disappear.
It found its people.
And I was one of them.
Which brings us to this week’s Stuck in the ’80s.
Fifteen years ago this week, in 2011, Sean Daly and I devoted an episode of the podcast to Streets of Fire. So we’re opening the archives and bringing it back, along with a new introduction about why certain movies become more than just movies to us.
Listening to it now is a little strange. It’s a time capsule inside another time capsule: we’re sitting here in 2026 listening to ourselves in 2011 talk about a movie from 1984.
And after all that time, I still love the damn thing.
